🧬 Key active ingredients
Retinol – 0.2%
One of the best-known cosmetic forms of vitamin A. With regular use, it supports skin renewal, smoother texture, elasticity, and less pronounced fine lines and wrinkles.
Due to the 0.2% concentration, this is already a targeted retinoid formula, where gradual adaptation is important.
Retinal
Retinal – retinaldehyde – is also a vitamin A derivative. Together with retinol, it supports care for skin texture, tone, elasticity, and visible signs of ageing.
SKIN1004 does not specify the exact concentration of retinal, so the 0.2% refers exclusively to the retinol content.
Hydrolyzed Sponge – spicules
Micro-sized, sponge-derived structures forming the basis of the Boosting Shot technology. Upon application, they may cause a slight needle-like sensation while supporting the surface distribution of active ingredients.
Due to the spicules, mild tingling, prickling sensation, or temporary redness may occur.
Squalane
A lightweight emollient that softens the skin, supports the skin barrier, and helps reduce dry, tight sensations. Especially useful as a complement to a retinoid formula.
Panthenol + Madecassoside + Centella Asiatica Extract
Hydrating and skin comfort-supporting ingredients that complement the more intensive retinoid-spicule formula with centella care.
Sodium Hyaluronate
A moisture-binding form of hyaluronic acid that helps maintain a more hydrated, softer, and plumper skin feel.
Adenosine
A cosmetic active ingredient that supports smoother, more elastic, and firmer skin appearance in the formula.
Tocopheryl Acetate – Vitamin E
A stable derivative of vitamin E that complements the formula as an antioxidant and skin conditioning ingredient.
📊 What did the manufacturer’s tests show?
According to SKIN1004 finished product tests, improvements were measured with formula use in:
- skin elasticity after a single use,
- skin density and pore elasticity after 2 weeks,
- visible appearance of fine lines and wrinkles after 2 weeks,
- skin barrier indicators after 1 week.
The brand also communicates hypoallergenic/irritation testing.
The absorption-enhancing effect of the Boosting Shot spicules was tested separately. The reported 132.8% higher absorption value was not measured directly with this retinol finished product but with a test formula containing the same spicules, so this is not presented as the product’s own clinical result.
🎯 Who do we recommend it for?
It can be a particularly good choice for:
- loss of firmness,
- care of visible fine lines and wrinkles,
- rougher, uneven skin texture,
- skin that has lost elasticity,
- drier and normal skin types,
- mature skin routines,
- those seeking a more targeted, spicule formula than traditional retinol serums,
- those wanting to use retinal alongside retinol.
Beginners with retinoids or spicule products, or those with irritated or damaged skin, should exercise increased caution.
🧴 How to use
In the first 1–2 weeks, use 2–3 times per week, primarily in the evening routine. Start by applying a small amount to targeted areas.
After cleansing and toner, gently spread over the skin. Do not rub vigorously: due to the spicules, application may naturally feel slightly prickly.
Once the skin tolerates it well, frequency can gradually increase to every other evening, then depending on skin condition, even more frequently.
After absorption, finish the routine with a moisturising cream.
Avoid the eye and lip areas, as well as irritated or damaged skin. Always use appropriate sun protection in the morning.
💗 Why do we love it?
Because this is not simply a 0.2% retinol serum. Retinal complements the retinol, and the Boosting Shot spicules give the formula a very different character than a traditional retinoid ampoule.
Meanwhile, SKIN1004 has not neglected comfort: squalane, panthenol, centella, madecassoside, and hyaluronic acid support hydration and barrier care. Thus, it is a well-constructed formula for those who want to work more targetedly on loss of firmness, fine lines, and uneven texture.
❓ Q&A
Does it contain 0.2% retinol or 0.2% total retinoids?
It contains 0.2% retinol. Retinal is also listed in the INCI, but the manufacturer does not specify its exact concentration. Therefore, the 0.2% should not be interpreted as the combined concentration of retinol and retinal.
Why does it sting during use?
It contains Hydrolyzed Sponge-derived micro-sized spicules. These may cause a mild tingling or needle-like sensation after application.
Is mild redness normal?
Mild, temporary redness or tingling may occur due to the spicules, which the manufacturer states typically subsides within 1–2 hours. However, discontinue use if irritation is strong or persistent.
Is it recommended as a beginner retinol product?
Not necessarily the first retinoid we would choose. Besides 0.2% retinol, it also contains retinal and spicules, making it a more intensive formula than a simple low-concentration retinol serum.
Can it be used daily?
After proper skin adaptation, the manufacturer states frequency can be increased to daily or every other evening use. We would not start with this: 2–3 times per week is recommended for the first 1–2 weeks.
Does it contain multiple types of hyaluronic acid?
No. The current INCI lists only Sodium Hyaluronate, so we simply refer to it as hyaluronic acid here, not as “hyaluronic acid derivatives.”
What should be combined with caution?
During the adaptation period, we would avoid layering other intensive retinoids, strong exfoliating acids, or additional spicule products in the same routine. This makes it easier to assess skin tolerance and reduces irritation risk.
How is it different from the Niacinamide 10 Boosting Shot Ampoule?
Both are based on the same spicule Boosting Shot technology but target different concerns. Niacinamide 10 is primarily for pores, uneven tone, and radiance care; Retinol 0.2 focuses on elasticity, firmness, texture, and visible wrinkles.
